Marcelo Sousa is a passionate advocate for multilingual learners and equality in public education, with over 17 years of experience as a writer, educator, singer, and coach. Originally from Brazil and now a longstanding U.S. citizen, Marcelo is fluent in multiple languages. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and elementary education from Kean University, as well as a graduate degree in TESOL/Bilingual Education and a Sixth-Year degree in educational leadership from Southern Connecticut State University. Certified by The Center for Christian Coaching, Marcelo dedicates his time to teaching and public speaking worldwide, championing educational equality. He also spends several weeks each year providing training and speeches across the globe, while developing his work as a Christian Life Coach in Brazil, where he also engages in significant philanthropic efforts.

Marcelo excels in training educators and developing comprehensive programs that equip them with the skills needed to implement effective EL-modified lessons across all grade levels. He continues his collaboration with Steve Gill in the ELL Critical Data Process, working closely with staff to create a district-wide ELL data process that distinguishes between language acquisition and disability, thereby promoting equitable access to services. As a CAPELL Board Member serving as Events Liaison and CABBE Vice Chairperson, Marcelo demonstrates exceptional leadership beyond the classroom. He leads an after-school program for international new arrival students (grades 6-12), designs engaging international family nights, and has developed comprehensive educator training programs for effective ELL-modified lessons (K-12). His commitment to data-driven decision-making is evident in his efforts to promote educational equality and excellence in public education.

A distinguished performer and director with a dynamic career in regional theater, Marcelo has played notable stage roles in “Titanic: The Musical” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” showcasing his versatility and passion for musical theater. As a director, he brought “Once on This Island” to life, demonstrating his storytelling and leadership talents. Marcelo has graced prestigious venues such as Steinway Hall and Danny’s Skylight Room, captivating audiences with live performances. His theatrical accomplishments include appearances in “Enter Laughing” and performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, broadcast live on NBC, highlighting his commitment to excellence and flair for captivating diverse audiences.

Beyond the stage, Marcelo has performed with various choruses throughout Connecticut and served on the board of directors for the New Haven Community Chorus and Chamber Choir, contributing as a concert series facilities organizer. This role underscores his dedication to fostering a vibrant community of music and the arts. Marcelo has also channeled his passion for the dramatic arts into theater workshops within educational settings, focusing on the impact of music on monologues, understanding lighting and costume design, and creating and analyzing playbills. These workshops culminate in inspiring trips to New York City to experience Broadway shows, offering children the transformative experience of witnessing live theater. Further enriching his musical expertise, Marcelo has undergone four years of vocal performance training under Leslie Giammanco at Giammanco Vocal Studios in NYC, honing a powerful and expressive voice that enhances every performance.

Adding to his diverse accomplishments, Marcelo is the author of “The Boy From Brazil,” a memoir that captures his unique life experiences. This book, available in both English and Portuguese, offers readers a glimpse into his personal journey, providing insight into the myriad experiences that have shaped his life and career.
